3DS “Record Return Levels” Story Fabricated, Refuted by Nintendo & Retailers

Sun Scare Story Refuted by Big Industry Players

An article that appeared in today’s copy of UK national newspaper, The Sun, has been deemed incorrect after it announced that retailers HMV and GAME had been overwhelmed with a large number of demands for Nintendo 3DS refunds.  The piece in question also states that both companies had seen “record return levels” after Nintendo’s 3D-capable handheld had “left thousands with dizziness and headaches”.

In light of this report, Eurogamer contacted the two retail giants, as well as Nintendo, and learned that,”The number of calls and emails with queries on Nintendo 3DS is in fact well below the rate experienced during past hardware launches and having spoken with our retail partners there are only a handful of people who have actually gone into stores to request a refund.”

GAME also backed up this claim, stating that it has apparently had “less than five people complain that they feel sick and want to return [the 3DS]”.

Furthermore, HMV suggested that The Sun may well have confused itself with trade-in statistics for previous iterations of Nintendo’s DS family, as many retailers, such as GAME, Gamestation and Argos, are currently offering special trade-in offers to reduce the price of purchasing the £229.99 (RRP) system.

The system has already sold more than an impressive 303,000 units in Europe alone, with Nintendo breaking launch weekend sales in the UK with 113,000 units sold.

Should Nintendo’s system go on to sell by the bucket-load like the original DS did, then time will tell if any significant issues exist with the system.  However, the chances are that The Sun, infamously known for making all sorts of reporting errors, have just simply got it wrong.

Got it wrong sounds an awful lot like “made this up cause we feel like it” Haha, but great article!

  2. The Sun is a worthless, trashy rag, unfit even for toilet paper. Consumed by those who enjoy “juicy celeb scandal” and populist xenophobia/racism, it really doesn’t surprise me that they would descend to the low depths of total fabrication. What does surprise me is that they wasted their energy on the titular article and not, say, Princess Diana.

    I don’t like The Sun.

It’s funny how many people seem hell-bent on destroying the 3DS. I haven’t heard any complaints from anyone who’s tried it, and my wife and I play ours quite a bit with no discomfort. Kotaku editor Stephen Totilo even took his 3DS to an eye specialist, and they say that the 3D can actually even help strengthen children’s eyesight in some cases: http://kotaku.com/#!5788720/so-i-took-my-3ds-to-the-eye-doctor
