DUST 514 Not So Free After All

Cover Charge and Two-Drink Minimum

Developer CCP are hedging their bets with the upcoming DUST 514, the persistent world FPS complement to the PC’s EVE Online. The PS3 exclusive, not due to be released until probably next year, is offering its players the unique opportunity to influence the gameworld of EVE through their actions in DUST, and vice-versa.

However, DUST 514 – initially announced as a free-to-play title – is not so free anymore. Apparently, players will have to pay a “cover charge” of around USD 10-20 to get into the game. Once in-game, that money will then be refunded to them in the form of in-game credits, presumably to make micro-transactions with. There are players who have become adept at playing freemium games while avoiding micro-transactions; this charge, say CCP, is a way for them to financially stabilize the game’s launch.

You’re really getting the game for free but you have to pre-buy credits in the beginning. We might go fully free-to-play down the line, but in the beginning we have a cover charge just to manage the initial launch of it.

Share Your Thoughts: Are you ok with CCP’s one-time charge for the game? Or should free-to-play not come with a mandatory charge?
