Age of Empires Online Already Looking Toward the Future

Playing With Yourself 2.0

Age of Empires Online is taking the winning formula of the RTS series and moving it into the free-to-play realm with optional bonus content to buy. While the game is still a few weeks away from its announced release date (16 August, 2011), Gas Powered Games and Microsoft are already granting sneak peeks at additional content not releasing until the end of the year, including new playable races.

At launch, players will be able to build, collect resources, and duke it out with both the Greek and Egyptian civilizations. New premium content is promised on a monthly basis, which players will be able to opt into for a fee. Then, by year’s end, we’ll be given access to purchase two all-new civilizations – the Celts and the Persians, each with distinct styles of architecture and unit designs – and the Skirmish Hall booster pack, which promises an all-new game mode.

In an email sent to the BnB offices earlier this week, these updates are expanded upon some more:

  • Celtic Civilization: Invaders from the Northern Tribes are here! Explore the snowy northern realms as you learn their new units, such as the frenzied Woad Raiders, the dangerous Druids, and the powerful Celtic Swordsmen.
  • Persian Civilization: Travel east as you command the Persians, one of the most powerful empires in ancient times. At their height, the Persians controlled much of the known world and influenced culture around the globe. Take control of unique units such as the Immortals, mounted Persian Archers, and special attack elephants.
  • Skirmish Hall booster pack: With the Skirmish Hall Booster, YOU control the battlefield. Customize your starting Age, starting forces, beginning resources, difficulty levels, and even the number of enemies you face. Take on one, two, or three enemies at once. Set the teams and choose the maps.
