EA Trademarks Classic Alpha Centauri

Return to Alpha Centauri

Well, it looks like EA have been dabbling in necromancy again, the sorcerers that they are. An eagle-eyed poster on NeoGAF spotted two trademark registrations for Alpha Centauri, the sci-fi turn-based strategy spawned from the grey matter of legendary Civilization designer, Sid Meier.

Alpha Centauri released in 1999 to universal acclaim; the New York Times famously proclaimed it to be a marriage of SimCity and the story-telling of Frank Herbert’s Dune. Adhering to the 4X sub-genre of exploration, expansion, exploitation and extermination, players were tasked with leading their idealistically distinct faction to domination on humanity’s new cradle world.

EA were in possession of the trademark from 1997 until 2010, leaving it to expire some ten years after the game’s release. It is unclear, then, what the publisher has planned for the revered title in the wake of re-registration.

Some enthusiasts speculate a sequel or remake, whilst others have suggested a Facebook browser game like the recent Civilization World. It is also a possibility that Alpha Centauri may see a re-release on EA’s Origin digital distribution service.

We’ll have more information as soon as it breaks.

My guess is that they’re just re-registering it to continue selling it through GoG.com. They reportedly can’t publish System Shock or Syndicate due to complex rights issues, so they’re probably aiming to avoid a similar problem.
