New “Slimline” Wii Console…Is the Same Size As the Original

Redesign Omits GC Compatibility but Retains Same Size

We reported last week that Nintendo will be releasing a redesigned Wii console in European markets during the holiday season labelled as a “family edition” package.  One of the key changes announced in Nintendo’s Gamescom press release was the removal of Gamecube support.

However, it would appear that the rumour mill and some misunderstanding have both gone a long way towards making people think that the new console would be sleeker in design.  Nintendo updated its website earlier today and confirmed that this new model is, in fact, exactly the same size as the original console.  The only physical difference is the Wii logo, which has been rotated horizontally, as the console is intended to be placed on its side when in use.

So there you have it folks.  If you were looking to cram a size-zero Wii into your already bulging console cabinet, then it looks likes you may have to go back to the drawing board.

The console is due to release sometime in October, 2011.
