3DS Ambassador Program Goes Live in NA & Japan

Early Adopters Can Get Their 10 Free NES Games…Early!

Despite an initial release date of 1 September, Nintendo has already made 10 free NES games available to those “signed up” to its 3DS Ambassador Program.  Eligible 3DS owners are those that connected to Nintendo’s eShop via their consoles before 12 August, 2011.

Last month, Nintendo announced that it would be considerably reducing the trade price of the 3DS console after lacklustre sales and a mounting fear that third-party developers may end up abandoning the system.  It came as a shock to many analysts and industry observers due to it taking place a mere 5 months after the system had launched to roaring pre-order success.  However, no one was as disappointed as Nintendo’s own fans who had, in some instances, shelled out full price for the glasses-free 3D portable.

As a reward for their commitment, Nintendo stated that it would be giving early adopters 20 free retro titles to make up for such a sudden price drop.  10 NES and 10 GBA games are promised to be available to download by the end of the year, and if you’re in either North America or Japan you may now claim yours.  The list of available games is as follow (it is yet to be fully confirmed whether the European line-up is the same):

  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Donkey Kong Jr.
  • Balloon Fight
  • Ice Climber
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Metroid
  • NES Open Tournament Golf
  • Wrecking Crew
  • Zelda II – The Adventure of Link
  • Yoshi

Meanwhile, the GBA line-up will include titles such as Metroid Fusion, Mario Kart: Super Circuit and Mario vs. Donkey Kong.  Unfortunately, European 3DS owners are unable to download their free games just yet, but we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as that changes.
