Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar Is Set Free on GoG

Consider This

This has been quite the week for GoG.com. In addition to an anthology of the first three Ultima titles releasing (as well as Peter Molyneux’s classic god-game Populous), there’s big news afoot as perhaps the most famous of the Ultima games has been added to the site, and it’s a free download, joining the likes of Beneath A Steel Sky. While Ultima Forever has had Ultima IV freely downloadable for a few months, the GoG edition doesn’t require you to fiddle around with DOSbox to get it up and running (the fiddling is done for you).

Ultima IV is notable for being the first RPG to subvert the “kill the bad guy” plots of typical RPGs, instead focusing on mastering the virtues of the land of Britannia. And it did this way back in 1985. So what are you waiting for? It’s an influential classic that’s still talked about. If you haven’t played it yet…what’s stopping you?

Note: Quest of The Avatar has nothing to do with either preachy blue aliens or bald-headed brats with magic powers.

I love this game. I played it on my Apple IIc so many hours. I can still remember the 5 1/4 inch floppy making noise as it loaded the next part. Ah, to be 14 again and playing this game.
